The situation in our community
With adolescent suicides at a level of 4.9 percent in 2006, the need to bring effective intervention to youth is critical.
Our strategy to create better health
We must make trained professional counselors available in areas where at-risk youth can be identified. By offering no-cost counseling to at-risk youth and families, we will prevent depression from escalating to suicide.
How are we doing this?
We established a partnership with the Omaha Public Schools and several area churches where we can provide free, confidential counseling by experienced, licensed, master-level mental health practitioners.
What impact are we having on the health of our community?
The program has treated over 10,000 youth and families. "We see the direct impact on achievement when a student works with the counselors," according to Nancy Bond, supervisor to the Guidance Counseling Department of the Omaha Public Schools.
